The colour of the water is red or yellow when it starts flowing out of the taps itself. Iron water in your wells that have ferric iron does not wait for the water to change its colour only after the water is stagnated.

Water Softeners are essential in treating ferrous iron.
Water softeners remove the minerals like calcium and magnesium from water and the iron is sedimented on resin beads of the water softener. If the resin beads are backwashed, the deposited ferrous iron will be flushed away. But it is effective only when there is low hardness in water.
